Sensei Otero, greetings from Atlanta. I like what you have to say about your martial arts path, and I especially like the customs and traditions you obviously emphasize in your programs. By way of background, I’m a former police officer, law enforcement agency director, college Judo Instructor, and Karate/TaeKwonDo competitor. It saddens me to see what martial arts have become now days in too many arenas. What used to be called “integrated martial arts” years ago is now called “mixed martial arts.” However, what has changed most is the tough guy/gal attitudes that evolve, disregarding the traditions (humility) that made the martial arts so worthwhile both mentally and physically. I very much miss training and teaching, however, an arthritic left knee makes it difficult for me to execute many of the skills I used to pride myself on. I also taught Goshin Jutsu No Waza emphasizing street useable techniques that could be applied effectively (much like Krav Maga), however, we too maintained the customs and traditions, and awarded kyu and dan ranks. In any event, best of luck and keep up the good work.
Regards,
Jon Crosby
Thanks for the comment, Jon. There are some people out there that are focused on being tough, but there are still many people who train for the love of the arts. I’ve been lucky in being able to find good people to train with and learn from. It sounds like you’ve had plenty of good training as well.
